New Year’s Eve Incidents Across Europe Leave Many Dead
The most catastrophic event took place in Switzerland, where a blaze tore through the Constellation bar in the resort town of Crans-Montana.
The fire claimed the lives of about 40 people and left at least 115 others wounded, many suffering serious injuries.
Authorities are still working to identify the victims and determine the cause of the disaster, with assistance from Italian, French, and Turkish officials supporting their affected citizens.
In Poland, two unrelated residential fires proved fatal. A man and a woman lost their lives in separate incidents in the towns of Swinna Poreba and Sarny Wielkie.
Meanwhile, a fire that broke out in the attic of a hotel in northwestern Poland forced the evacuation of 19 people, according to a news agency.
Polish police reported a busy night nationwide, responding to more than 15,600 incidents. Law enforcement detained 333 individuals and arrested over 100 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Elsewhere, the Netherlands also saw deadly consequences from New Year celebrations. Fireworks-related accidents resulted in two deaths, including a 16-year-old in Nijmegen and a 38-year-old man in Aalsmeer, Dutch outlets reported, according to Dutch media.
